TraceDec® Contactless Conductivity Detector

 
Contactless conductivity detection has gained significant importance since its introduction in 1998. Besides the determination of inorganic ions in the low ppb range it is also possible to apply conductivity detection for the detection of organic compounds.
 The TraceDec® contactless conductivity detector in combination with capillary electrophoresis or chromatgraphy represents a sensitive detection scheme for a variety of analytes, including inorganic and small organic ions, amino acids, HIV therapy drugs, and others. For ion chromatographic (IC) purposes the detector can be easily placed after the suppressor using a PEEK® tube with an appropriate outer diameter. This offers the advantage of avoiding detection dead volumes which is of specific importance for miniaturized chromatographic systems. 
 

Principles of Capacitively Coupled Contactless Conductivity Detection

The TraceDec contactless conductivity detector is based on two metal electrodes which are placed around the separation capillary, which can be of any non-conducting material (e.g. fused silica, PEEK , Teflon ).
After an AC voltage is applied to the actuator electrode (left) the current passes the capillary wall, the detection gap between the electrodes inside the capillary, and back to the pick-up electrode (right).The signal is then further amplified and processed.

Capillary Electrophoresis:
The detector can be placed at any position along the separation capillary (I.D. 5-175µm).
 
Liquid Chromatography:
A PEEK tube (O.D. <400µm) is used for contactless conductivity detection in liquid chromatography (HPLC or IC)
  Analog output:
FS 0-1V to an A/D converter to be used with a commercial CE or HPLC software.

 

WARNING: Please use only a high performance A/D converter otherwise the performance of the detector will be reduced!

  Digital output:
Besides a standard analog output for use with any AD converter, the TraceDec  contactless conductivity detector comes with the Tracedec Monitor Software.

The TraceDec   contactless conductivity detector comes with the TraceDec Monitor  . This program allows you to convert your data to the standard AIA format for use with any other chromatography software.
